Obituary

William E. Grisé, Sr. (Bill), 87, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2023, at his home in Springfield, MA, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 1, 1935 and liked to say that he came with the rest of the bills on the first of the month. Son of the late Joseph M. and Florence (Fontaine) Grisé, he was raised in Chicopee and graduated from Chicopee Trade School (’54). Bill began work at Tessier Millwork in Holyoke, becoming a manager and he remained in the building materials field for the length of his career. A devout Catholic, Bill devoted much of his time after retirement to being of service to his church (Mary Mother of Hope, East Springfield) as a Eucharistic Minster, president of the parish council and the Men’s Club, facility manager, and directing the alter server program. Bill was also the Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Elder Council #69 in Chicopee, MA. He and his wife of 66 years, Carol (Hagen) Grisé, traveled extensively across the U.S. but the highlight of each year was their Fourth of July Jamborees with the grandsons in the backyard of their home. Being surrounded by family was what mattered most in life to Bill. In his spare time Bill enjoyed tinkering in his workshop and he was known to be able to fix anything (after two tries). Bill was predeceased by his parents, brother J. Myles Grisé and sister Florence Burke. Bill is survived by his wife Carol and brother Jack Grisé (Alda) of Largo, FL, as well as four children, Mary Nathan (Stephen) of Vernon, CT; Ann Marie Santos (Carlos) of Venice, FL; William E. Grisé, Jr. (Michelle) of Sturbridge, MA; and Steven Grisé (Marianne) of Georgetown, MA. He also leaves seven grandsons, Brian Santos (Hector Colon), Shawn Santos (Nicole), Gregory Santos (Rebecca), William E. Grisé III (Marissa), Kyle Santos, Michael Grisé (Alyssa Fugiel), Cole Grisé and great grandchildren, Mia and Asher Santos, and Harper and Hadleigh Grisé. Bill also leaves many extended family members and countless friends, whose support and love he cherished. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Grise Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, October 2, 2023 from 9:30 – 10:30 at the Grise Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Mary Mother of Hope Church at 11:00 AM. William will then be brought to his final resting place in St Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CatholicTV.org or to a charity of one’s choice.
