WORCESTER: David G. Carney, 72, of 37 Shaffner St., died Friday, April 22, 2005, after a long illness. He leaves his wife of 46 years, Margaret T. (Kennedy) Carney; two sons, Philip D. Carney and his wife Sarah of Deep River CT, Matthew J. Carney and his wife Geraldine McCarthy of Port Henry, NY; three daughters, Susan M. Carney and her husband Peter Braveman of Fairbanks, Alaska, Diane M. Driscoll and her husband William of Worcester, Karen T. Goettelmann and her husband John of Ripton, VT; a brother, Thomas P. Carney and his wife Alice of Vienna, VA; nine grandchildren, Jonathan, Kimberly and Danielle Driscoll, John David and Timothy Goettelmann, Rebecca and Samuel Carney-Braveman, Jack and Isabel Carney; several nieces and nephews. A brother, John F. Carney, Jr. and a sister, Mary R. Ryder, both predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of the late John F. and Margaret (Friend) Carney and was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. He graduated from North High School, University of Massachusetts- Amherst and earned his masters degree in history at Assumption College.
Dave was Assistant Chief Probation Officer at the Worcester Juvenile Court where he worked for 23 years, retiring in 1993. He previously was a History Professor at Worcester Junior College for several years. Before that, he worked several years as a Claims Adjuster for Travelers Insurance. He was a member of St. Bernard's Church and its Holy Name Society, the Green Hill Park Coalition, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union. He enjoyed gardening, snow skiing, and once coached in the Worcester Youth Soccer League.
CALLING HOURS will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 25, in KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln St. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in ST. BERNARD'S CHURCH, 228 Lincoln St., followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery. The family suggests donations in Dave's memory be made to St. Bernard's Parish Fund, 236 Lincoln St., Worcester, MA 01605.
