Sara Claire Rogers Peacock, a longtime resident of Tifton, died on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at Maple Court Assisted Living. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. in the parlor of Tifton's First United Methodist Church. Her funeral service will follow in the sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2014, with Rev. Benjy Varnell and Rev. Wayne Helms officiating. Mrs. Peacock will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Loyalty Sunday School Class, the Tallassee chapter DAR, and the Primrose Garden Club.
Mrs. Peacock was born October 2, 1913, in Speigner, Alabama and spent the early years there, graduating with honors from Wetumpka High School and then in 1934 receiving a B.A. Degree from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. She was married to James L. Peacock, Jr. of Columbus, Georgia on February 29, 1936 and moved with him from Columbus to Tifton in 1937 where he worked for Georgia Power Company and later established the Atwater-Peacock Electric Company after concluding WWII service in the Army.
A devoted mother and grandmother, Mrs. Peacock raised three children in the Tifton area where she was active in First United Methodist Church, serving as a Primary Department Superintendent, holding various offices in the Methodist Women and working for many years on the church Staff-Parish Committee. She was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class. In the community she was a life-long supporter of the arts, helping to bring the classical music series to Tifton, helping to establish the Tifton Arts Council and promoting the growth of a public library. Mrs. Peacock was a charter member of the Tifton Primrose Garden Club, a member of the area Colonial Dames, and remained active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Tallassee Chapter based in Tifton.
Mrs. Peacock was predeceased by her husband, James Lowe Peacock, Jr., and by her parents Clayton and Laura Pearson Rogers, as well as two sisters Laura Rogers Jolly and Louise Rogers McAllister and their spouses Joseph D. Jolly and James Roy McAllister, all Alabama residents. She was also predeceased by her brother Clayton Rogers, Jr., of Tuscaloosa, AL, sisters-in-law, Mary Peacock Speight of Columbus GA and Dorothy Peacock Madding of Albany GA and brothers-in-law Leroy Speight and Scott Madding.
Survivors include her children Dr. James Lowe Peacock III and wife Florence of Chapel Hill, NC; Claire Peacock Helms and husband Wayne Helms of Dothan, AL; Laurie Peacock Jordan and husband Zack W. Jordan of Apopka, FL. Grandchildren are Dr. Louly Peacock; Dr. Claire Peacock Raymond (Dr. Mark Raymond); Natalie Peacock Corral (Dr. Emiliano Corral); Catherine Helms Casey (James Casey); Dr. John Robert Helms (Rachel Cole Helms); Marguerite Jordan Martin (Evan Martin); Sara Jordan Brosious (Jon Brosious); and Rebecca Lauren Jordan.
Great-grandchildren are Nicholas Clayton Konz and Flora Rochelle Konz; Yannis Mark Raymond; Isabella and Lucia Corral; Michael Connell, Christopher Connell, Zack Casey, and Von Casey; and Annabelle Pearl Helms and William Phillip Helms; and Carter Thomas Martin. She is also survived by sister-in-law Mrs. Emily Searcy Rogers of Tuscaloosa AL and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express appreciation for the care of Mrs. Peacock to Mrs. Patricia McCrae, Mrs. Marie Williams, the Holloway family and to all the devoted staff at Maple Court.
