Grace (Jolicoeur) Read Berry, of Hingham, MA, passed peacefully in the arms of her oldest granddaughter on September 18, after a long period of declining health.
Grace was born 1924 in Quincy, MA to William and Florence Jolicoeur and was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Francis T. Read, and her second husband of 15 years, John Berry.
Grace is survived by her children; Frances Alger and her husband Fred of Plymouth, William Read and his wife Kathy of Abington, James Read and his wife Maria of Hingham, Susan Guthrie and her husband Larason of Maine, Elizabeth Townsend and her husband Laird of Maine, John Read of Maine, and Andrew Read and his wife Debra of Hingham. She was predeceased by her two sons, Richard Read and Joseph Read. Grace leaves the world numerous beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother William Jolicoeur Jr of Holbrook, MA, and two special nieces, Ann Therese Baker and Mary Jane Jolicoueur. And predeceased by two brothers Paul Jolicoeur and Edward Jolicoeur. A special thanks is extended to all the staff at Harbor House who honored Grace’s spirit and offered genuine caring during her final days.
Grace will be remembered for her artistic eye, creative spirit and boundless energy. She was an avid traveler, embarking on two world trips, including crossing the entire Asian continent by train in the late 1980s with her intrepid traveling companion, her oldest daughter, Frances Alger. She was an excellent self-taught seamstress and started a successful drapery business Designs by Grace at age 60, for which she was named “South Shore Entrepreneur of the Year” in 1995. Grace loved to read and was a life-long learner studying theology and writing at Stonehill College well into her seventies. Well-known for her culinary talents, Grace will be remembered for the countless delicious meals she loving prepared throughout her life.
Grace was a devote Catholic and a member of resurrection parish in Hingham before moving to Plymouth were she became active with St. Bonaventure well as a member of the Dominican Laiety for over 20 years. Her strong faith in the goodness of God and the power of prayer never wavered.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Parish 803 State Road, Plymouth, MA on Monday September 23 at 10:00 AM. A period of Visitation will be held at the Richard Davis Funeral Home 619 State Road (Rte 3A) Plymouth (Manomet) at 9:00 AM. Burial will be in the Manomet Cemetery.
