TEWKSBURY - Matthew J. Sheedy, age 84, died Friday morning May 10, at D’Youville Center for Advanced Therapy in Lowell, with his beloved family at his side. He was the loving husband of the late Kathleen E. (Quinn) Sheedy, who died in 2008.
He was born in Medford on September 6, 1928, the oldest of six children of the late William M. and Mary (Conway) Sheedy. Raised in Medford, Matthew joined the Army in 1946 and served in per-war Korea. After his military service, Matt met and married Kathleen Quinn of Wakefield, MA in 1954. They moved to Tewksbury in 1956 where they raised four children; Kathy, Carol, Paul, and Ann. Matt attended and graduated from Lowell Technological Institute with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for RCA as a mechanical engineer for 32 years and retired in 1989.
Matt was the proud founder of Tewksbury’s N Gauge Model Railroad Club and over the years, constructed an “N gauge” model railroad that filled his entire basement. The quality and size of the display drew the attention of local news stations, devoted model railroad enthusiasts, was a favorite destination for local Boy Scout troops and was a popular stop along the Tour De Chooch.
He also enjoyed playing and watching golf and was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.
Matt leaves a large family. He leaves four children and their families: Kathleen and her husband David Stupack of Methuen; Carol and her husband John Cahill of New Gloucester, ME; Paul Michael Sheedy and his husband Brian Shea of Carlisle; Ann Marie of Tewksbury; six grandchildren, Sean and his wife Mattie Furey; Ryan Furey all of San Diego, CA; Tammy and her husband David McGann; Dawn Sheehan all of Tewksbury; Jake and his wife Jaimie Cahill of ME; Jonathan and his wife Amy Cahill of Woburn; a great grandson, Jack; and was anticipating the birth of his second great grandchild within weeks. He also leaves three siblings and their families, Paul and his wife Joan Sheedy of West Bridgewater; Frank and his wife Ingrid Sheedy of Willow Grove, PA; and Mary and her husband Rick Pynn of Medford; and many nieces and nephews. He is the brother of the late William Sheedy and John Sheedy.
His funeral was held Wednesday , May 15, followed by a burial with Army Honors alongside his wife at the Tewksbury Cemetery on East Street in Tewksbury.
