Obituary

Manuel Pina, Sr., 82, of New Bedford died suddenly on Wednesday October 3, 2012 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Antoinette M. "Nettie" (Gomes) Pina.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Alfred and Mary (Barros) Pina, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

Mr. Pina was formerly employed as a correctional officer at MCI Bridgewater and MCI Walpole. He had been the proprietor of Manny's Barber Shop for many years. He also worked as a longshoreman for the International Longshoremen's Association.

During the Korean War, he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association.

He is survived by his son, Manuel "Kirk" Pina, Jr. and his wife Caryn Bradley-Pina of Houston, TX; his siblings, Anita Robinson of Mattapoisett, Helen Jenkins and Frank Pina, both of New Bedford, Alfred Pina, Jr. of East Providence, RI, Richard Pina of Fairhaven, and Dr. Burt Pina of Marion; three grandchildren, Preston M. Pina, Reneé Antoinette Pina, and Jordan C. Alexis; and a great-granddaughter, Daziah.

He was the brother of the late Eva Coombs, Antone “Mickey” Pina, and Edwin “Baby” Pina.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 6-9 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
