Rev. Curtis David Mixon, 84, of Tifton died Friday, August 31, 2012, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2012, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Rev. Steve Hood will officiate with a eulogy to be given by Jerry Johnson. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Harry Brewer, Jerry Johnson, Terry Hall, Donnie Mixon, Keith Mershon and Douglas Morgan will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 1, 2012, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Rev. Mixon was born on September 9, 1927 in Tifton and was the son of Thomas M. Mixon and Jane Morgan Mixon, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Willis Mixon; his second wife, Stella Rowe Mixon; four brothers; and two sisters. He graduated from Norman College in 1958 and was in the first class that Dr. Keebler started for nurses and preachers. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a retired minister and also retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation in the Lab Testing Department. He preached for 51 years and was the pastor of several churches over the years of his ministry, with his last pastorate being at Shingler Baptist Church. He was a member of the Tift County Mell Association, the Mallory Association, the Turner County Association and the Colquitt County Association. He was also a member of the American Legion for 62 years. He was a charter member of Fourth Street Baptist Church and a member of Tifton's First Baptist Church. He had lived in Tifton all of his life.
Rev. Mixon is survived by one step-son, Darrell Benson of Tifton; one step-daughter, Barbara Taylor of Tifton; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Leigh Taylor of Tifton.
