Obituary

Joaquim J. "Jack" Burgo, Sr., 57, of New Bedford died Wednesday March 24, 2004 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Marlene D. (Anacleto) Burgo.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Manuel and Charlotte (Pina) Burgo, he had lived in New Bedford for all his life.

He attended St. Lawrence Church and Our Lady of the Assumption Church in New Bedford.

Mr. Burgo was formerly employed by St. Luke's Hospital as the supervisor of laundry and linen until his retirement five years ago. He was the first person to receive the St. Luke's Hospital President's Award for Excellence in Guest Relations in 1990. He also was a disc jockey who operated J.B. Family Productions.

Mr. Burgo was a member of the New Bedford Coin Club and a graduate of the New Bedford Citizens Police Academy. He participated in and achieved awards at the Whaling City Custom Car and Truck Shows. He attained the rank of Black Belt at the Fred Villari Studios of Self-Defense. He enjoyed music and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joaquim J. "Jay" Burgo, Jr. and Mark A. Fermino, both of New Bedford; four daughters, Ronda Fermino, Jacqueline Burgo Centeio, Desiree Burgo, and Venus Burgo, all of New Bedford; a brother, Carlos Burgo of New Bedford; two sisters, Matilda "Tillie" Morris of New Bedford and Kathleen Terry of Dallas, Texas; 13 grandchildren, Rainelle, Taylin, Alexandria, Alissa, Madison, Marcus, Hanna, Derik, Travis, Chantelle, Ryan, Andrew, and Michaela; an uncle, Armand Pina of Pawtucket, RI; a godchild, Michael Burgo of Middleboro; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Deolinda "Marie" Gebor and Linda Burgo.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordWednesday March 31, 2004 at 8 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 9 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday March 30, 2004 from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
