Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of David L. Bent of Osterville, MA (formerly of Boston and Dedham) announce that he passed away on March 31, 2025, at home surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of Irene (Yaroschuk) for 45 years. Proud father of Tracey Bent of Weymouth, David Bent Jr. and his wife Janine of Walpole, Kerri McCarthy and her husband Thomas McCarthy of Milton, Kristen Bent of Boston, and Mary Bell of Boston. Stepfather of John McNelley of Revere, David McNelley and his wife Erin of Billerica, and Nancy McNelley of Lynn. Loving papa of Keith Bent, Jenna, Matthew and Michael McCarthy, Shea and Sophia Johns, Dylan Bent, Michael and Kayla McNelley, Kylie Sheehan and great-grandpa to Alexandra and Charlotte Bent. Dave also leaves behind his sister Sandra Hernandez of Dedham.


Born September 18, 1937 to Maureen (Robertson) and Chester Bent. Dave grew up in Dedham, MA and graduated from Dedham High School in 1955. Prior to graduating he enlisted in the U.S. Army Ready Reserves and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force assigned to the 421st Air Police Squadron and was then chosen for the Honor Guard of the United Nations Fareast Command serving as security to the Commander in Chief stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He was honorably discharged in October of 1962.

Dave retired from the Boston Police Department after serving 32 years. Starting his career at District 4 in 1968 and went on to become a member of MOP/Special Ops. His Harley Davidson, leather jacket and spit shined boots showed his pride as a motorcycle officer. He hung up his leather jacket and moved to the Hackney Unit where he retired in February of 2000. Dave was a proud union representative of the Boston Patrolman’s Union and a member of the Boston Police Emerald Society.

Dave and Irene then moved to their dream house on the Cape, spending 25 years of family time by the pool teaching his grandkids how to swim.

Visiting hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St, Dedham on Wednesday, April 2 from 4-8pm. A funeral service will be held in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Dedham on Thursday, April 3 at 10:00am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
