Mystic - Joan Francis (Crandall) Russo, 79, beloved wife, mother and “Nanny,” passed away peacefully March 27, 2025. Joan was born in New London Jan. 2, 1946, and lived in Mystic all of her life.
She worked at Mystic Seaport in the late 1960s, then became a homemaker. In the early 1980s, she became a crafter, making Christmas mice and ornaments, and then later with her business, The Mouse Corner. She and her husband travelled all over the state selling nautically themed furniture and paintings at craft shows. Joan was a beautiful soul and talented artist, with her family as the center of all her love and devotion.
She is survived by her children, James and wife Melissa (Di Buono) Russo of Groton, Laura (Russo) Williams and husband Doug Williams of Sag Harbor, N.Y. She is also survived by her sister Carol (Crandall) Oddo of Ledyard, and Frank Crandall of Ledyard. She is predeceased by her son Joseph Patrick; three sisters; and three brothers. She adored her grandchildren and visiting the Mystic Aquarium with them, as a lifetime member. She is survived by Mary Di Buono and Michael Russo of Groton, and Dylan, Kyle and Kiara Williams of Sag Harbor, N.Y.
Joan and Vinnie Russo were a staple in the community, living this life together for 57 years, and passing within two days of each other, as they were never apart in this life.
Joan will be honored in a private ceremony and graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
