Charles Raymond “Ray” Grimball
February 17, 1938- March 16, 2025
Charles Raymond “Ray” Grimball passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025 in Anderson, Indiana after a long illness. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina to Charles Grimball, Sr. and Dorothy Johnson Grimball on February 17, 1938. He graduated from Burke High School, entered the U.S. Navy, and after serving his country, matriculated to Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana. He graduated from AC with a bachelor’s degree in science. He worked for 35 years at General Motors, Inland Fisher Guide plant, in Anderson as an engineering technician. After retirement, he worked at several camera stores including Jack’s in Muncie, and Cord Camera in Castleton, Indiana.
Ray’s great loves were his wife Barbara, whom he married in 1966, and their two children, Jeremy of Anderson, and Angelique of Louisville, Kentucky. Ray and Barbara’s 58 years of marriage were spent enjoying the country together, raising their children, horseback riding, reading voraciously, and especially photography and cooking. He was rarely without one of his cameras. Growing up in the film world, he would travel anywhere seeking the best images. After their kids were grown, he introduced Barbara to photography as well especially in camera clubs like Killbuck Photo Guild and Muncie Camera Club. Ray became president of KPG and saw it through changes from film to digital shooting. He helped lead several road trips for the club, most notably four trips to the Smoky Mountains.
Ray was an award-winning photographer, capturing many local and state-wide awards in contests such as the Indiana State Fair, which he entered for fifty straight years. His ribbons were just one symbol of his excellence in photography as he truly enjoyed photographing flowers around the yard as well as monuments throughout the Southwest.
In sports, Ray held a 35 year membership in the local Y, working out in both classes and in the weight room. He inspired many younger members as he grew in age but still attended the rigorous workouts. He was a long distance runner with a couple marathons and mini-marathons under his belt. With his close college friend Fred Byers, Ray participated in some heavy-duty tennis matches too.
Ray’s other deep love for was for cooking. He grew up in Charleston, SC where he spent time in his grandfather’s restaurant, Johnson’s Tea Room. This restaurant was in the Green Book-a travel guide for African-Americans, listing businesses and establishments that were open to people of color, offering safe lodging, food, and other services during a time of widespread discrimination.
Ray is survived by his wife Barbara, son Jeremy, daughter Angelique, grandson Justin, sister Dottie Stevens, brother Arnold Grimball, sister Dixie Bullard, brother Kenneth Grimball, and brother Bruce Grimball. He is also survived by many loving cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, an infant brother George, brother Sterling, and sister Augusta.
