Obituary

Susan Elizabeth (Early) Hurley, of Dedham and Westwood, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 28, 2025. She was 82 years old.

Born on May 23, 1942, in Milton, Massachusetts, Susan was the daughter of the late Austin and Mary Margaret (Lennon) Early, and sister of the late Jean Foley and Janice Klehm. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Daniel B.Hurley, with whom she shared 41 years of marriage and thousands of miles of road trips.

Susan's legacy lives on through her children: Mary O'Brien and her husband, Michael O’Brien, of West Roxbury; Michael Hurley and his wife, Ana Hurley, of Medfield; and Laura Metz and her husband, Martin Metz, of Walpole. She was the adored, and adoring, Nana of Kyle, Owen, Brendan and Grace O'Brien; and Charlie, Liam, James and Elizabeth Hurley. She also leaves behind Princess, her beloved Calico cat.

A proud double Eagle, Susan earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Boston College. While working on her master’s degree, she worked in the neurosurgery ICU at  Boston Medical Center as a clinical instructor for the BC School of Nursing.

Glover Memorial Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess) in Needham was her professional home for nearly 20 years; she began in the ICU in the late 1970s and served as Director of Nursing from 1987 until her retirement in 1997. 

Even in retirement, she was a caretaker. Susan volunteered for many years at The Deaconess the Westwood Senior Center and blood pressure clinics at her parish, St. Timothy Catholic Church in Norwood. Her delight in taking care of others was surpassed only by her joy in being with her grandchildren. 

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Timothy Catholic Church, 650 Nichols Street, Norwood, MA 02062, Friday, March 7, 10:30 a.m. Visiting hours are Thursday, March 6, from 3 - 7 p.m., at George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 456 High Street, Dedham, MA 02026. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Ellen Gifford Cat Shelter, 30 Undine Rd, Brighton, MA, 02135.
