Peter R. Franchi, age 87, a resident of Winchester since 1966, passed away unexpectedly on December 23, 2024. He was the beloved husband for 65 years of Caroline (Whalen) Franchi.
Born in Hyde Park, Boston, Peter was the son of the late Pietro and Giulia (Franchi) Franchi. He was born and raised in Hyde Park and was a 1955 graduate of Boston Latin High School. Peter attended Harvard University and graduated in 1959 with a degree in engineering. He received both his Master’s Degree and PhD in electrical engineering from Northeastern University, and was employed for many years as an electrical engineer at Hansom Air Force Base. In his spare time, Peter enjoyed traveling all over the world. He was a talented painter, working mostly with acrylics, pastels and water-based oils for painting landscapes and portraits, and could also be found skiing when the weather permitted. An avid Boston sports fan, Peter enjoyed following the local teams. He coached Winchester Girls Soccer for many years and looked forward to family summer getaways to Camp Wulamat in Bristol, NH on Newfound Lake. In addition to his wife, Caroline, Peter is lovingly survived by his children: Peter M. Franchi and his wife Loretta of Lynnfield, Diane St. Onge and her husband Gary of Louisville, CO, Christine Martyn of North Andover and her partner John Tierney of Somerville. He was the dear grandfather of Kirstin Darian, Kevin St. Onge, Katie Leeds, Peter J. Franchi, Rory Martyn and Keely Martyn, and the great-grandfather of Charles Leeds. Peter was predeceased by his sisters Dora Fields and Lillian Brunelle. Visiting Hours will be held in the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Monday, December 30 from 9:30-11:00AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester at 11:30AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
