Adrianne Strang Loweth, aged 74, passed away in Clinton, Nov. 28, 2024, after a 4-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, William Alvord Loweth; her three children, Scott, Karen (married to Michael R. Kunerth) and Gregory; brothers, Walter D. Strang III, Peter W. Strang and David C. Strang; nephew Walter “Dan” D. Strang IV; and niece Carly N. Strang.
Adrianne was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. Aug. 20, 1950, to Joan McVey Strang and Walter Daniel Strang Jr. The family moved to Gales Ferry in 1954, and Eastern Point in Groton in May of 1960. She studied at Saint Bernard School for Girls in New London, and graduated in the Class of 1968. Adrianne enrolled at Cazenovia Junior College in Upstate New York before completing her Bachelor of Arts degree at Michigan State University in 1972. She then enjoyed a successful and rewarding career as a Contracts Analyst and later, as the company’s corporate secretary at Sonalysts in Waterford, leaving in 1987 to grow her family.
In her teenage years, Adrianne adopted her father’s passion for sailing and racing on Long Island Sound that continued through the remainder of her life. Her passion for the maritime industry led to roles as a docent at the Mystic Seaport Museum, a local sailing instructor and a job selling small recreational tugboats. Sailing was also a passion Adrianne shared with her husband, Bill, originally racing and cruising their Morgan 24-foot sloop. Along with their children, family and friends, A and Bill avidly participated in Wednesday Night Racing with the Mystic River Mudheads, spring and fall Off Soundings on her father’s yacht Brer Rabbit III, and enhanced the Junior Sailing Program at the Ram Island Yacht Club when her children participated. If she wasn’t sailing, you could find her at her beloved Shenecossett Beach Club in Groton.
Known to her family as “Senior Management,” Adrianne’s leadership and organizational skills translated seamlessly into her roles as the chairwoman of the Parent Teacher’s Association of Noank Elementary School in the 1990s. Then in the early 2000s, as president and board member of the Shenecossett Beach Club, member, then chairman for the Ram Island Yacht Club Trustees nominating committee and for the Groton Fitch Scholarship Program. Lastly, she was treasurer for the Mystic Garden Club in 2016-2017.
Along with her children, another one of Adrianne’s great joys was gardening. The meticulousness and precision in her gardening cultivated beautifully maintained perennial gardens and vegetable beds at the family home in Noank. All logically sequenced to promote balance across the whole garden. In 2005, she was very proud to become certified as a Connecticut Master Gardener. She nurtured an enormous, blooming jade plant from her teenage years, that is still in the solarium at the family home. An amazing number of family and friends have their own jades growing — all from cuttings over the last more than 50 years. A little piece of Adrianne that will always be with us.
In later years, Adrianne and Bill enjoyed many rounds of golf and being active members of Stonington Country Club. They also enjoyed traveling to Europe and sharing lots of laughs and love in the company of family and friends. “We will miss you, ‘A/Adro/Sr. Management/Sister!’”
A service of remembrance will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mystic, followed by a reception at the Mystic Yachting Center at the Mystic Shipyard in West Mystic. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, and to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. The family also wish to acknowledge the wonderful staff at the Ocean Meadows Senior Living and Memory Care facility in Clinton, who managed her care to the end.
