Alexander Scott Woods, lovingly known as Alex, Woody, Unky Al, and Broski, passed away on November 13th, 2024. Born on August 15th, 1990. He was a 2008 graduate of Ledyard High School. Alex brought joy and laughter into the lives of all who knew him.
Alex is survived by his devoted parents, Michelle Woods-Sweatland and Joseph Sweatland of Gales Ferry, CT; his sister Amanda Gedney and her husband Sean Gedney of Clay, NY; his brother Jeremy Sweatland, his wife Shannon, and his cherished niece Jackie of Preston, CT; his sister Nicole Sweatland and her boyfriend Marcus Teune of Ledyard, CT; his aunt Denise, her fiancé Dave Fournier, and cousins Joey and Josh Knight of Groton, CT; his father Scott Woods, his wife Elizabeth, and his brother Aaron of Salem, CT. He will also be deeply missed by his grandparents, Jesse and Donna Coburn of Canby, OR, and his grandmother Beverly Sweatland of Pulaski, NY, and a multitude of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his beloved great-grandmother “G-Ma” Dorothy Clark, his grandparents Erwin Clyde and Janice Kay Woods, his grandfather John Sweatland, and his cousin Andrew Bower.
A talented athlete, Alex excelled in sports throughout his life. He played varsity baseball, serving as co-captain of the team. He was a member of the 2007 championship Ledyard High School Football team. After high school, he continued his passion by playing Legion ball, joining intramural softball teams, dart leagues, and a golf league. His natural athleticism and determination made him a gifted competitor in every sport he tried.
Alex dedicated his career to Electric Boat, where he worked as a designer since fall 2008, most recently serving as a Senior Electrical Designer.
Beyond his professional and athletic achievements, Alex was a self-proclaimed nerd with a passion for Marvel Comics, Star Wars, Pokémon, Disney, and video games. He shared a standing video game tradition with his cousins Joey and Josh, as well as his best friend, Jeremy “DJ.” His creative spirit was evident in his ability to invent words, like “fridger” for refrigerator, endearing him even more to those around him.
Alex’s love for animals was unmatched. He had an uncanny ability to connect with and train them, sharing a deep bond with his two beloved dogs, Miley and Jasmine. We take comfort in knowing he’s playing fetch with Miley now.
A lifelong fan of the Denver Broncos and the New York Yankees, Alex was a no-frills kind of guy who could often be found in his Broncos gear or his Captain America hoodie. His quick wit, sense of humor, and unwavering loyalty were cherished by all who knew him. Whether it was his extraordinary dancing skills lighting up every room he entered or his spot-on Lil Jon impression bringing laughter to everyone around, Alex had a way of making life more vibrant and fun.
To say Alex was loved and cherished by countless friends and family members, is an understatement. His loyalty, humor, and the joy he brought to everyone he met will remain forever in our hearts.
A celebration of Alex’s life will be held at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. Calling hours are Thursday 11/21 from 5-8pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday in the same location at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to either the ASPCA or your local humane society in honor of Alex, reflecting his love for dogs.
