Frederick Govan Wright, affectionately known as "Sonny", was born March 26, 1942, in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Sonny was born to Frederick Wright and Francine Moore. He was raised by his great-grandmother, known lovingly as "Nanny," who instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and community that he carried with him throughout his life.
Sonny attended Brighton High School, where he excelled as an athlete, particularly in track and field. For those who knew him well, they may recall his often-told story that he was the fastest kid at Brighton High – a claim he shared with pride. It was at Brighton High that Sonny discovered his passion for cars through the school's automotive program, sparking a lifelong love for mechanics and craftsmanship. Known for his generosity and skill, Sonny could always be found lending a hand, fixing bikes for neighborhood kids, or working under the hoods of friends' and family members' cars. Sonny’s generosity and skill made him a beloved and well-respected figure in the neighborhood.
A true lover of simplicity, Sonny was known for his laid-back nature and great sense of humor. He appreciated the little things in life, and he found peace in fishing trips and time spent at the gun range. He was also an avid bowler, proudly competing in several leagues over the years, where he showed off his skill and enjoyed the camaraderie of the sport. Sonny found joy in his love of old-school music spanning across all genres, and in his love of all things Boston sports. He was an avid Boston sports fan and well-versed on Boston sports history.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Francine and his brother, Jockery. He is survived by his beloved sister, Sondra Anderson, and his children, Janeen Wright of Tampa, Florida; Ballin Wright of Whitman, MA; Chevelle Wright of Brockton, MA; Brigette Tavares of Brockton, MA; and Belinda Wright of Boston, MA. His legacy lives on through his children, 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Sonny’s humor, and genuine kindness will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
