Mary Mathurin
10/10/2024

Mary Katherine Mathurin, a name that resonates with love, strength, and laughter, was born on April 26, 1942, in the beautiful landscape of Bellevue/ Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, B.W.I. She lived a vibrant life in her hometown until the age of 24, embraced by the warmth of her family—her beloved grandmother Alicia Etienne, her mother Mari Fanis Fredrick, and her stepfather, Lima Estaphane (affectionately known as Pa-Luma). In 1967, a new chapter began when Mary moved to Saint Croix, U.S.V.I., where destiny introduced her to John Mathurin. With a playful certainty, John declared he would marry her. Mary, amused, walked away, but love has a way of surprising us. After a beautiful courtship, John proposed, and she joyfully accepted. They wed on July 12, 1969, forging a bond that would shine brightly for 53 wonderful years. Mary often shared her dream of becoming a mother; she envisioned having 3 or 4 children, but life had other plans! She and John joyfully welcomed 11 children into their world: Allison, Judith, Allen, Emmanuel (d), Joanna, Gilbert, Tracy, John Jr., Lumina, Shellina, and Paul. Allison, raised from birth as her own, held a special place in Mary’s heart, as did each of her children. The legacy of love continued as Mary became a devoted grandmother to 32+ beautiful grandchildren—each one a testament to her enduring spirit {Amba, Shamila, Akim, Syrenna, Angie, Donaldo, Alysia(Jordan), Dexter, Millicent, Cloene, Aliyah, Malik, Mallory, Taylor, Tracy Jr, Denay, Idalis, Shafique, John Jr (JUJU), Jullianna, John Jr (Mattie), Katherine, Janae, Joshua, Jianna, Jeremiah, Janeline, Kisha, Asha, Rya (Meme), Rashie, Alicia, Cushing} —and a proud great-grandmother to more than 11+ great-grandchildren{ Amilyah, Nicoy (McCoy), Lyla, Honest, Amoura, Ashly, Dana, Bailey, Azalea, Alaisia, Malandra, Ali’zayah, Isaac, and Kingston, Alanni}. Mary’s siblings were her brothers: Matthew Fredrick (Dalton), Augustin Fredrick (Norridge), Mark Lovence (Eh-bon), Raymond Lovence (Ti-Took), Mayvielle Lovence (Ti-boy), Bernard Lovence, sisters: Flowanize Lovence, Agatha Jeffery (Mayzina), Dominica Donelly (Unicar). She has many in-laws and friends. Her family circle wasn’t just large; it was a magnificent tapestry woven with laughter, joy, and shared moments.

Mary was not just a mother; she was a warrior. She faced down the challenges of life with unmatched resilience—surviving two battles with breast cancer, strokes, and even COVID-19. Her strength and determination inspired everyone around her. She wore many hats: a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, and to her children, she was a beacon of unwavering support and love. Her culinary talents brought her family together; they cherished her delicious meals just as much as her delightful company. From her creative wat to say “no!” to her infectious laughter, Mary had an innate ability to brighten the room. She adored fashion and embraced life’s adventures with an open heart. Mary took immense pride in her children’s accomplishments, celebrating each milestone with joy. When her older children moved to Boston, she lovingly nudged the rest to follow in their footsteps. Life taught Mary and her family that while they might not have had much materially, they had each other and their faith in Jesus. She was a giver, always willing to share her time, talent, and treasure with those around her, embodying a spirit of service to both family and community. Mary dazzled everyone with her jokes and her love for waltz and country dancing. With a heart expansive enough to embrace all, she was a blessing to her family and friends from the very day she was born. Rising from humble beginnings, she became a strong, intelligent, and brilliant mother, businesswoman, showcasing the power of perseverance and love. While ten of her children were born in Saint Croix, many proudly speak patwa (Creole) all taught by her and John, a beautiful nod to their rich heritage. Mary’s life is a testament to how one can rise above challenges, all while nurturing a spirit grounded in love, laughter, and faith in God. Her favorite dish? Lobster and potatoes, of course! And let’s not forget her legendary storytelling skills and those quirky American expressions—words like “pas,” “because” or “WCK”—that brought laughter and mystery into conversations. The meaning of “WCK” remains a secret to this day, forever evolving, much like the joyful memories she leaves behind.

In honor of Mary, we invite everyone to think of the red rose—a symbol of her beauty, strength, and enduring legacy. Thank you, Mary, for your vibrant spirit that will forever light up our lives. You are cherished, loved, and will always be remembered.
