Obituary

Marie Barrett passed away peacefully on April 28, 2024. Born March 30, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Dominic and Thomasina (Palumbo) Sciaraffa. Raised in Dedham, she graduated from Dedham High School, and obtained a position at John Hancock where she worked for several years prior to her marriage to George S. Barrett. Together they had two sons, Thomas and Robert.

Marie was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Parish in Dedham before moving to Rockland as she neared retirement. In Dedham she was a member of St. Mary’s Sodality, and a Cub Scout den mother for many years. An avid knitter, she made baby blankets for generations of babies born to family and friends, and donated a constant supply of blankets for premature babies to area hospitals. She also enjoyed planning and discussing food and recipes.

A familiar face around town, she held many part time jobs in Dedham over the years, including her own business baking beautiful special occasion cakes, and in management at Cumberland Farms and Bussey Street Market during school hours. Once her children were grown, she went to work at Mid-Atlantic Auto Parts Distributor, where she held various office positions for over 20 years until she retired at the age of 75.

Marie had a large circle of friends, and enjoyed many local day trips with them. She was lively and fun, and popular everywhere she went. She loved her family, cherished family gatherings, and took a real interest in the lives and activities of her children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her husband of 34 years, George Barrett. She is survived by her son Tom and his wife Karla, and her grandsons Corey and Nick, and her son Bob and his wife Anne, and granddaughters Hannah, and Sarah Barrett Robbins and her husband Todd Robbins, as well as a sister, Nancy Sauer and her husband Jim, nephew Jim Sauer and his family, and nieces Annmarie McPherson and Debbie Scotton, and their families.

Visiting hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., Dedham on Friday, May 3 from 4-7pm.
