Wayne A. Sunderland, 87 of Westport passed away 4/26/2024. He was the longtime companion of Nancy Z. Cook , formerly of Glastonbury, CT.
Born in Fall River May 15, 1936 son of the late Arthur Sunderland and Anne L.(Andrew) Sunderland .
He was a 1953 graduate of B.M.C Durfee High School and attended Boston University receiving an Associate's Degree, then completed his civil engineering studies . He was employed by the Massachusetts Highway Department as a civil engineer for 39 years, retiring in 1997. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1955 to 1963 with an honorable discharge. He resided in Dartmouth from 1964 to 1979 and was an elected member of the Board of Public Works and Planning Board. He resided in Westport from 1980 until his passing, and was elected a member of the Planning Board. He also served as Westport's Planning Board Commissioner to the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District (SRPEDD) and was awarded Commissioner of the Year in May 2007. He enjoyed and owned several boats from 1961 to 2005. His last boat was a 35 foot pleasure boat , which he named "Always On My Mind" .
He is survived by his daughter Tracy A. Sunderland of Mattapoisett, and his late son Brett A. Sunderland of Fairhaven, his late brother Lee A. Sunderland and his wife Diane of Tiverton R.I. and their sons Mark, Lee , Chris and their families.
