Mr. John W. Gentile Sr., age 78, of Barnstable formerly of Medford, passed away January 1st following a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Louise K. (Fortune). Born in Boston he was the son of the late Rosa (Ferlauto) and Joseph Gentile.
John was a retired master electrician. He worked for the Raytheon Corp. for fifty years. He served during WWII in the US Army as a Ski Patrol Medic overseas in Italy and Yugoslavia. Following his service in WWII John continued to serve with the US Navy. In more recent years John was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 11 -6 out of Orleans. He was a member of the VFW Post 2578 of Hyannis and also volunteered with the Barnstable Police Dept.
John loved sports and for many years he was a hockey referee with the MA Hockey Assoc. He also was very active with senior softball on Cape Cod.
In addition to his wife, He is survived by his children, Suzanne Theriault of Newburyport, John Gentile Jr. of Lowell, stepchildren Sandra McCoole of Marblehead and Paul Nocivelli Jr. of Holden. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hunter, Finn, Van, Una, and Celia. Brother of Rosalie DeVita of Arlington, Joseph J. Gentile of Centerville, Arthur Gentile of Woburn and Helen DeMaggio of Hanover, NH. He is further survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Dello Russo Funeral Home 306 Main St. Saturday, at 9 Am. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Clement Church 71 Warner St. Medford, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
