Rev. Paul L. Toland, of Sandwich, formerly of Dedham, died September 30, 2005, at St. Joseph Manor in Brockton. He was 78. Rev. Toland was born in Boston and was the son of the late Frank and Katherine(Muldoon) Toland. He was a Vietnam War Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Yale University, M.A., and St. John Seminary, Theology Division. He was ordained February 1, 1953 and assigned to St. Mary’s Parish, Dedham, on February 11, 1953, Chaplain of the U.S. Navy, May 8, 1961, St. James, Stoughton, March 1, 1989, and Pastor of St. Mary’s Church, Dedham, September 1, 1989. He retired in 1996.
He was the devoted brother of John Toland and his wife Jane of Brockton, William Toland and his wife Evelyn of Hingham and the late Frank J. Toland. Brother in law of Rita M. Toland of Sullivan’s Island, SC. Also survived by 17 nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., Dedham, on Monday from 4-8 PM. Rev. Toland will lie in State in St. Mary’s Church, Dedham, on Tuesday from 3-8 PM. The Most Rev. Robert J. Banks, retired Bishop of Green Bay, WI, will be the Principal Celebrant and Homilist at the funeral mass in St. Mary’s Church, Dedham, Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, West Roxbury.
