Obituary

Dr. Joseph Richard Cataldo, M.D., retired Army Colonel, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away on Monday February 17, 2014 at Mt. Carmel Nursing Home after a long illness.

He was born in Boston, MA January 18, 1929 the son of Peter and Josephine (Serino) Cataldo.

He was a graduate of Boston Latin, Harvard University and Boston University Medical School. He served his country during World War II and Vietnam where as a Green Beret in 1971, participated in the famed Son Tay raid, an attempted rescue of POW’s from a concentration camp.

After retiring from the Army, Dr. Cataldo opened private practice in Alexandria, VA. He moved to New England in the 1980’s, first working as a consultant for Blue Cross Blue/ Shield of Maine and later as an emergency room doctor at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Keefe Cataldo; four children, Karen Scheneman, Corinne Rose, Michael Cataldo and Joseph Cataldo; eight step children, Joseph Keefe, Quentin Keefe, James Keefe, Thomas Keefe, Paul Keefe, Anne Farley, Maura Keefe and Patrick Keefe; as well as 19 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, He was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Cataldo II; and three sisters, Laura Settipani, Nancy Cherichiello and Marie Manfra.


A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, February 21, 2014 at St. Catherine Church, Webster St., Manchester, NH.

Burial with military honors was in the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
