Leonard R. Engelhardt, 92, of Bonita Springs, died on August 4, 2013, at Hospice in Fort Myers, FL after a brief period of declining health. He was born in Manchester, August 2, 1921, to Franklin and Marion (Morrison) Engelhardt. He attended the Parker school and graduated from Manchester High School West.
He married Dorothy (Schricker) Engelhardt in May of 1943. During their 70 years of marriage they resided in Manchester and Bedford before moving to Bonita Springs, FL in 1984.
Mr. Engelhardt was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. Following military service he joined the Manchester Police Department. He retired as a Captain in 1974 after twenty five years. During his career he was active with the Manchester Police Relief Association as well as a board member of the NH Police Association. Following retirement he worked at the NH Crime Commission and as chief bailiff at Hillsborough County Superior Court.
He enjoyed genealogy, collecting antiques, seashells, and creating sea art. He was a long time member of the Bektash Scottish Rite Shiners, Washington Lodge #61. He was a 32nd, Degree Mason and was a past president of the Noble Travelers Shriners in Bonita. He enjoyed fishing in the gulf, working in his yard and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Engelhardt, of Naples FL; his sons Larry Engelhardt, and his wife Mary Jane of Fort Myers, FL, Ronald Engelhardt, and his wife Elaine, of Merrimack, NH; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and one great, great grandson; his brother, Clifford Engelhardt, and his wife Nancy of West Chazy, NY; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers Franklin Engelhardt, of Watertown, NY and Alson Engelhardt, of Belmont, NH.
A funeral liturgy took place on Monday, August 26, 2013 at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester.
Burial will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery.
