SMITH, Catherine T. "Kay" (Ryan)- Of Chelsea, unexpectedly September 19th at the age of 76. Devoted wife for 53 years of Michael J. Smith, Sr. Beloved mother of Michael J. Smith, Jr and his wife Susan of Saugus and Kim Ann Clifford and her husband James of Melrose. Cherished grandmother of Ryan P. Smith and Matthew J. Smith both of Saugus. Daughter-in-law of Josephine Smith of Chelsea. Dear sister of Marlene Taraskiewicz of Peabody, Sheila Ciaramella of Chelsea, Helen Asaro of Burlington, Joseph Ryan of Maine and the late Leo F. Ryan, Jr., Kevin Ryan, Agnes Gordon, Mary Cushing, Patricia Coyne and Martin Ryan. Also lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Thursday, September 24th at 11 AM in Our Lady of Grace Church, 59 Nichols Street, CHELSEA. Visiting Hours at her late residence, the Smith Funeral Home, 125 Washington Avenue, Chelsea on Wednesday from 3-7 PM. Services will conlude with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
A lifelong Chelsea resident, Kay passed away unexpectedly Saturday afternoon at the Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett from a massive heart attack, despite unrelenting work by the emergency room doctors and staff for almost a hour to revive her.
A graduate of St. Rose High School, in her early years she worked for State Street Bank in Boston. During her children's school years she worked part time and then full time for American Optical Corporation and lastly, for over a decade as a teller at the Chelsea-Provident Bank on Broadway.
