Obituary

James S. Quinn, M. D. – of Charlestown, formerly of Winchester. October 15, 2007. Son of the late Edmund and Mary Quinn of Providence, Rhode Island. He is survived by his former wife Helen, his beloved children, Joseph and his wife Shannon of Rogers, Arkansas, James of Lowell, Edmund of Weston, and Maureen of Lexington. He is also survived by dear friends Phyllis Costa and Honey Fitzgerald, eight beautiful grandchildren and three sisters, Mary Regan and Sarah Hill of Chicago, and Jane Broughton of Michigan. Dr. Quinn was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island before attending Brown University and graduating with honors in the class of 1951. He graduated from Tufts Medical School in Boston in 1955 and completed an internship at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York before serving as a medical officer in the United States Army until 1958. Dr. Quinn completed a residency in cardiology in 1961 and then practiced internal medicine specializing in cardiology in Malden from 1961 to 2007. During this 46 year period he treated thousands of patients, and three generations of families in the Malden area. He was a constant presence and a beloved figure at the Malden Hospital for decades. His love of medicine was legendary, and he proudly considered himself a throwback to a time in American medicine when community hospitals thrived and medicine was far more personal. In the 1970’s Dr Quinn was a pioneering advocate of teaching children healthy lifestyle habits through the development of the Malden Public Schools Early Awareness program. Dr. Quinn was the last physician to “see patients” in the Malden Hospital building. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the A.J. Breslin and Son Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant Street in Malden. Relatives, friends, co-workers, and former patients are invited to attend a Funeral Mass and celebration of the life of “Dr. Quinn” at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden on Friday Oct. 19th at 9 AM followed by interment in Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester. The family would like to thank the truly remarkable and compassionate nursing staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford.
