Obituary

Mr. Major Burris Brown, Jr., 78, of 256 Rosalyn Rd., Rockingham, died Monday, January 10, 2011.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 14, in Sweet Haven Church with Pastor Mitchell Roller officiating. Internment with full military honors will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park

Mr. Brown was born in Richmond County on February 9, 1932, a son of the late Major Burris Brown, Sr. and Gertrude Steen Brown. He served in the US Army, later retiring from the US Army National Guard as a First Sergeant in 1992. For a number of years he served as the Public Works Director for the town of Carolina Beach, and into his retirement he continued working as a security guard. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Lillian Rose Wright Brown; a son-in-law, Butch Wallace; a brother, Wadis Brown, and a sister, Doris Lyerly.

He is survived by three sons, Freddy Brown and wife Cheryl of Rockingham, Ricky Brown and wife Pam of Hamlet, Keith Brown and wife Tina of Carolina Beach; three daughters, Sandy Allen and husband Mike of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, Robin Wallace of Rockingham, Tracey Brown of Wagram; fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Sweet Haven Church, 424 Midway Rd., Rockingham, NC 28379.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9:00 PM at Sweet Haven Church, and other times at 256 Rosalyn Road, Rockingham.
