Obituary

George F. Hines, of Medford, formerly a proud long time resident of Somerville, passed away on April 28th, 2010 at the age of 87. Loving husband of the late Joan Elizabeth (Carroll) Hines with whom he shared 51 years of marriage. Father of George V. Hines and his wife Rose of Reading, Stephen J. Hines and his wife Connie of Arlington, the late John L. Hines and his wife Deborah of Medford, Nancy M. Hanley and her husband John of Lunenburg, Paula Hines of Medford, the late Francis X. Hines and David F. Hines and his wife Victoria of Fitchburg. Grandfather of Chip, Matt, Kevin, Shannon, Elizabeth, Erik, Peter, Daniel and Erika. Great grandfather of Vincent. George Hines was a WW II Veteran of the United States Navy having served in the South Pacific aboard the USS Charrette as a Gunners Mate. The Charrette and her crew became known as the Jap catchers of the Pacific after capturing a fake hospital ship carrying hundreds of Japanese Troops. George was a Gold Life-Member of American Legion Post 19 in Somerville for 65 years. He was actively involved in the Post and was a member of the color guard that marches in the annual parade in Somerville. A carpenter, George was a member of the Carpenter’s Union Local 40 and was involved in the construction of many Boston area landmarks, including the State House and the Prudential Center. He also worked at the Wonderland Race Track for over 12 years prior to his retirement. Relatives & friends are invited to attend his funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Tuesday May 4th at 9:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden at 10:30 AM. Services will conclude with burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday May 3rd from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Special Olympics of Massachusetts, Attn: Donations, 512 Forest St., Marlborough, MA 01752.
