Obituary

Michael D. Sampson, 73, a Retired Major of the US Air Force, died suddenly at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis on Tuesday, January 26 after being stricken ill at his home. He was the husband of 54 years of Lynne L. (Raymond) Sampson. Born in Stoughton, he was raised in Stoughton and was a graduate of Stoughton Schools. Upon his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force, he spent the first seven years as an enlisted man at which point he attended and graduated from Officer Candidates School. He spent the next 13 years as an officer at various assignments including a tour in Vietnam. He retired in 1974 as the rank of Major and as the commander of the 3501st Recruiting Group based in New Hampshire. After his retirement, he worked as a builder and renovator of homes. He also continued his education and was a graduate of UMass-Dartmouth. He has been a resident of Dennisport since 1974. In his free time, he enjoyed restoring classic automobiles and reconditioning and repairing antique furniture.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Amy-Lynne Sampson of Dennisport and Scott M. Sampson and his wife Christine of Switzerland. He was the brother of Alan Sampson of CA, William “Skeeze” Sampson of Stoughton and the late June Poskus. He is also survived by his grandchildren Emily and Gregory Sampson and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services will be held at the VA National Cemetery, Connery Ave, Bourne, on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 11 AM. The Celebration of Michael’s Life will continue following the services with a reception at his late residence at 1 PM.
