Obituary

BEVERLY: Edward S. Smith, 45, died Saturday, January 2, 2010 in The Oxford in Haverhill following a long battle with ALS.
Born in Beverly on June 22, 1964, he is survived by his father, John F. Smith and his wife, Diane of Palm Bay, Florida and son of the late Roberta (Belanger) Smith. He had resided in Beverly most of his life before moving to Haverhill in 1995.
Ed was employed as a letter carrier for the U. S. Postal Service in Beverly for ten years. Affectionately known as “Smitty” by his close friends, he was a graduate of Beverly High School class of 1983, where he played on the football and basketball teams. A lover of sports, he continued to participate by organizing and playing flag football. He was also an assistant football coach at Haverhill High School for several years before being diagnosed with ALS.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his beloved daughters, Olivia A. Smith and Casi R. Smith both of Stratham, NH; a sister and brother-in-law, Annette and John Miller of Billerica; a brother, John H. Smith of Salem; Ed’s former spouse and best friend, Wendy and her husband, Eugene DiMariano of Stratham, NH; a niece, Jamielee Miller Medeiros and her husband, Sean and a nephew, Jonathan Miller all of Billerica.
His funeral services will be held on Friday in the St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be privately held in the Central Cemetery, Beverly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to The ALS Foundation, Massachusetts Chapter, 320 Norwood Park South, 2nd FL., Norwood, MA 02063.
