Hershel Byron Howell Obituary - Water Valley MS

Hershel Byron Howell, age 87, died Monday, April 7, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, MS. He was born October 4, 1926 in Skuna Valley, MS to the late James Braxton and Hilma Hunter Burt Howell and most of his early years were spent in Yalobusha County. Hershel graduated from University High School in Oxford, MS and went on to serve in the United States Army during WWII after which he attended the Atlanta School of Art and the University of Mississippi where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a 50 year Mason and a member of First United Methodist Church of Water Valley, MS. He was a retired Gulf Oil Distributor; Founder, Realtor and Appraiser for Howell Realty Company in Water Valley, MS; and an author of three published books. Hershel was a founder and charter member of Yalobusha Country Club; a Colonel on Governor John Bell William’s staff; served as a Commissioner for the State of MS Game & Fish Commission and served on the Board of Trustees for Yalobusha General Hospital in Water Valley. He was passionate about the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing, and he loved spending time with family and friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 10, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 11, 2014 in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Rev. Allen McGraw officiating. Burial will be in the St. Andrews Cemetery in Oxford, MS.

Hershel is survived by his daughter, Holly Howell Turner (Tim) of Water Valley, MS; four sons, Trent Howell (Shelley) of Water Valley, MS; Paul Howell (Wanda) of Gulfport, MS, Rex Howell (Denise) of Water Valley, MS and James Howell (Kecia) of Greenway, AR; his sister, Maralyn Bullion of Oxford, MS; sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Jean McCall Howell and his brother, James B. Howell, Jr.
