Obituary

William Field, 87, of New Bedford died Wednesday February 2, 2011 at Sacred Heart Home. He was the husband of Margaret A. (Whitmer) Field.

Born in Albany, NY, the son of the late Henry and Catherine (Vedder) Field, he lived in Fall River before moving to New Bedford in 1953.

Mr. Field was formerly employed as a steam engineer at the Newport Naval Base until his retirement.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.

He was an active member of the Southeastern Mass. Amateur Radio Association, a member of the Freetown Memorial Post 6643 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a life member of Fall River Rod and Gun Club and the New Bedford Pistol Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Deborah Quinn, M.D. and her husband John of Nahant; a son, Donald Field, Ph.D. and his wife Linda Marino Field of Beaufort, NC;two brothers, Al Field of Somerset and Henry Field of Orlando, FL; three sisters, Catherine Bond, Eugenia Field, and Harriet Pritchard, all of Spring Hill, FL; and nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
