Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Irving Herbert "Herb" Pomeroy III, 77, legendary jazz trumpeter and educator, died peacefully at his home in Gloucester on Saturday, August 11, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy “Dodie” Gibbons. He was also the husband of the late Elizabeth (Loftin) Pomeroy.
Born in Gloucester on April 15, 1930 he was the son of the late Dr. Irving H. Pomeroy Jr. and Alice (Ehler) Pomeroy. Herb attended Gloucester High School and was a graduate of Williston Academy, Class of 1949. He attended Harvard University, but left after one year to study music at Schillinger House, the predecessor to Boston's Berklee College of Music.
Herb was a renowned jazz musician, educator, and bandleader. After several years on the road as a trumpet player in the bands of Lionel Hampton and Stan Kenton, he stepped out on his own with The Herb Pomeroy Big Band, which was acclaimed nationally for both their live performances and recordings. In 1996, Herb was inducted into the International Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame and in 1997 into the Down Beat Jazz Education Hall of Fame. In 2007, Salem State College awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award. Also a noted composer and arranger, Herb's name became synonymous with jazz in the Boston area. Duke Ellington called Herb one of America's jazz treasures.
Herb was an avid fan of local sports, including the entire Gloucester High School football program, as well as the Intertown Baseball League. He was also a great fan of the Boston Red Sox and delighted his grandchildren with his encyclopedic knowledge of the team's history and statistics.
