Andrew “Jack” Grass, age 77, died Monday, May 30, 2016 at his home in Water Valley, MS. He was born July 17, 1938 in Point Clear, AL to the late Andrew Curtis and Marcella Hayes Grass. Jack retired after twenty years of service from the United States Army where he served as Command Sgt. Major. He served in many areas including two tours in Vietnam and two tours in Germany. While serving he earned the following medals: Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Army Commendation Medal (2d Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal, Four Overseas Service Bars, Driver and Mechanic Badge, Meritorious Unit Commendation (2d Award), Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Republic of Vietnam Technical Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Engineer Badge. Jack loved his church family. As an active and faithful member of Hopewell Baptist Church, he served over the years as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Song Leader and any area where he was needed. He was a member of the Gideon's, Free Masons, and the American Trappers Association. Jack was on the Board of Directors for the Yalobusha Water Association and for the Restoration of Pine Valley School, and was Chaplain for the VFW Post 4100. Jack and his wife Charlotte founded the Watermelon Classic 5K Run that is held each year in Water Valley. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed trapping, spending time with friends and family, working in his community and helping others.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, MS. Funeral Services will follow at 5:00 pm on Thursday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks with Bro. Freddie Buchannon and Bro. Ronald “Bubba” Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery in Yalobusha County with Ronnie Eubanks, Dave Hovey, Ken Dorris, Tony Griffin, Andy Hall, and Frank Chapman serving as pallbearers. Jimmy Berry, Larry Carr, Bro. Rick Glidewell and Joel Rogers will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Jack is survived by his wife Charlotte Brower Grass; his daughter, Jody (Dave) Leonard of Valdosta, GA; his son, Curtis Andy (Leigh Anne) Grass of Carlsbad, CA; five grandchildren, Ashleigh Flora, Allison Castle, Jilli Leonard, Eli Leonard and Anna Reed Grass; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Marcella Parker and Jill Hall.
