Obituary

Albert W. Lowe, 80, of New Bedford died Monday January 26, 2015 at Tobey Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Marjorie A. (Borges) Lowe.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Harry P. and Alice (Knight) Lowe, he lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth for most of his life.
As a child he and his siblings were active members of the First Congregational Church at Lunds Corner Sunday School.
Mr. Lowe studied in the auto shop of New Bedford Vocational High School, graduating in 1953 and later served in the U.S. Army.
After working for the Union Street Railway, he became the proprietor of the Pleasant St. Service Station located near the Armory. He purchased the Joe Goodman Foreign Cars Building across from Brooklawn Park on Ashley Boulevard and renamed it Pleasant Motors. There he sold and maintained superlative used cars, building up and keeping a loyal customer base over the years.
Al loved old cars. His showroom became a landmark where he displayed his 1941 Cadillac Convertible and his "Gray Lady" 1958 El Dorado Biarritz convertible that were kept in mint driving condition. He participated in many local car cruises. One of his favorite memories in recent years was his trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania for the Eastern Division Antique Automobile Club of America National Fall Meet.
In later years it was his daily routine to visit with car buffs at Capitol Motors on Dartmouth Street. He appreciated the friendship, good care and company of Ronald Moura, Sr. He enjoyed traveling with a friend to Delekta's Old Time Pharmacy in Warren, R.I. for a coffee frappe and Nabs crackers.
Mr. Lowe was a member of the Quitticas Lodge A.F & A.M. and the Abraham H. Howland, Jr. Lodge A.F. & A.M., both of New Bedford.
He is survived by his companion, Rita Noon of New Bedford; two sisters, Ruth Santos of Bourne and Alice Ashworth of New Hampshire; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was the stepfather of the late Randy A. Henriques, and brother of the late Beatrice Hopwood, Violet Braley, Donald, Harry, Carlton, Philip, Samuel, and Stanley Lowe.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.
