Obituary

Hugh J. McKenna, 94, of New Bedford died Wednesday December 17, 2014 peacefully at home. He was the husband of the late Kathleen (Harrington) McKenna.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Quirk) McKenna, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Mr. McKenna was formerly employed as a cable splicer for the New England Telephone Company until his retirement.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was a member of the New England Telephone Company Pioneers and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

He was an avid gardener, great neighbor, and wonderful grandfather.

His family would like to thank the wonderful caretakers from Home Instead who cared for him during his illness.

Survivors include three children, Paul J. McKenna and his wife Nancy of Acushnet, Kathleen M. McKenna and her husband Jacques Weissgerber of Brookline, and Anne M. Murphy and her husband David of Reading; his devoted brother-in-law, Gerald P. Harrington of New Bedford; seven grandchildren, Aimee Shaughnessy, Caitlin Araujo, Erin B. McKenna, Esq., Alexander D. Murphy, Brendan J. Murphy, Matthew P. Murphy, and Martin Weissgerber; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 5-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM at St. Lawrence Church.
