Obituary

William P. McCarthy, 93, of New Bedford died November 21, 2014 peacefully at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth surrounded by his family.
He was the husband of Dorothy (Monteiro) McCarthy, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late William and Rosanna (Hayes) McCarthy, he was raised in St. Mary's Orphanage and lived in New Bedford most of his life.
Mr. McCarthy was formerly employed as a delivery man for Bond Bread and later served as the Veteran's Agent for the City of New Bedford before retiring from T.B.S.
Mr. McCarthy served in the U.S. Army during World War II participating in the Invasion of Normandy and the battles of Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a recipient of European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the World War II Victory medal, Bronze Star medal, Silver Star medal and the Good Conduct medal. He later served as a Sergeant Major during the Vietnam War.
He enjoyed gardening, cooking and most of all, spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Rosanna Tetreault of Fairhaven; a son, Shaune McCarthy of New Bedford; and 2 grandsons, Timothy Tetreault and Kristofor Tetreault.

His Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 9 AM. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4-8 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
