Obituary

Alfred Veer, 96, of New Bedford passed away on Wednesday October 29, 2014 at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was the husband of Margaret M. (Duggan) Veer; they had been married for 74 years.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Arthur Veer and Ida (Lariviere) Veer Normandin, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

Mr. Veer was formerly employed as a screening machine operator at J.C. Rhodes until his retirement. He later worked at The General Store.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and participated in the Battle of the Bulge under General George S. Patton. He was a member of the Pvt. A. Poirier Post 3260 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

An avid fisherman, he taught many youngsters with his knowledge of fishing. He was especially proud of his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathleen Mendes and her husband Charles of Somerset and Carol VerCammen and her husband Kenneth of New Bedford; a sister, Doris Medeiros and her husband George of New Bedford; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Theresa Robert, Theodore Veer, Raymond, Leo, Albert, Adelard, and William Normandin.

His Funeral will be held on Monday at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 10 AM.
