Katherine (Hassan) Penton, age 84, passed away at the Sacred Heart Home in New Bedford on September 10, 2014. Katherine was the daughter of the late Gani Hassan and the late Mary (Markowski) Hassan. She was wife of the late Pierce Penton.
Born in New Bedford, Katherine was a lifelong resident who had great pride and love for the city. Together with her husband Pierce, they were very active in the fishing community as owners of the scalloper F/V Rainbow. They were also the owners and managers of numerous residential real estate properties. Katherine had great pride in being a successful businesswoman. She was kind, generous, and had a positive effect on the many lives she touched. She was a high honors graduate of New Bedford High School, where a scholarship in her name is awarded yearly.
Katherine was pre-deceased by her sister Helen (Hassan) Miranda, and son Wayne Penton. She is survived by her brother Michael Hassan and his wife Mary of Framingham, daughters Paula (Penton) Sullivan and her husband John, and Pauline Penton, of New Bedford. Other immediate family includes a niece, nephew, daughter-in-law, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins.
Katherine’s family wishes to recognize the compassionate and loving care given to her by the staff on St Michael’s Unit at Sacred Heart Home and by her physician, Dr. Victor Mailey.
Her Funeral will be held on Monday at 8:30 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd. at 9:30 AM.
