Stanley Adams Byers
6/27/2014

BYERS, Stanley Adams 83, PhD Material Scientist. On Friday, June 27th, a gentle and generous soul from a bygone era passed from this earth. A dear man, father and beloved grandpa, Stanley “Pops” Byers died after a long fight with cancer. He was an original - a country boy from rural Bellville, Ohio who traveled the world and met Sylvia Mary Ballas, an RN and a beautiful and spirited city girl from New Orleans. They were married for 46 years. He worked as a glass engineer at Ball Corporation, and was a Professor at Ball State University in Muncie, IN where he and Sylvia lived for 30 years and raised two children. Stan was many things; a scientist who constantly tried to better understand and contribute to the world, an entrepreneur who built his own business, and a teacher who thought that learning was fun. He taught his kids to drive a tractor, cut wood and plant a garden. He was a very kind man who found joy in making unseen gestures to help out others, and a loving father with a wry sense of humor who doted on his granddaughter. But most of all, he was a man who enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, and was always optimistic and ambitious about the possibilities and ability for individuals to impact those around them. Stan and Sylvia moved to Boston in 2007, where he quickly embraced Boston’s sports teams, and became familiar and appreciative of the history and culture of the neighborhoods of Mission Hill, Dorchester and Roslindale. And as he had done all of his life, made this new place and its people his home. Widowed in 2012, he is survived by his son, Stanley S Byers of Washington D.C, his Daughter and Son-in-law Elizabeth and Adam Sucher and his cherished granddaughter, Evelyn Sucher of Roslindale, MA. Also surviving, are his brother and sister-in-law, Hugo and Charlotte Byers of Ohio; his sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Ken Brightbill of New Jersey; his sister-in-law Celina Byers of Minnesota; along with an extended family of nieces, nephews and grand-nieces/nephews too. He was preceded by his brother Edward Byers, and his brother William “Bill” Byers. A lifetime Unitarian, Stan elected to not have a funeral however a memorial is being planned at a later date. In his memory, donations may be made to any of the following charities. The PCDH19 Alliance, The Cute Syndrome .
