Hanley, John "Jack" W., Fire Captain B.F.D. (Ret.) of Hyde Park, MA and Prince Edward Island. Jack passed suddenly at his Hyde Park home on January 27, 2014 at the age of 64. Beloved son of Mary Kelley of Easton and John Hanley of Mashpee. Dear brother of Patricia Kelly of Mashpee, Kathleen Kiely of Easton, and Ellen Hanley of South Boston. Jack was predeceased by his beloved brother, Raymond Hanley of Dorchester. A retired captain with the Boston Fire Department and member of Local 718, Jack loved nature and spent much of his time at his home in PEI. He fell in love with the island as a child, and eventually he designed and built his own home there, fondly referred to as "The House that Jack Built". Following his retirement Jack pursued his many interests, friendships and travels. He was a lifelong learner, loved music, reading and the great outdoors. He especially enjoyed playing the piano and sailing. He had friends in many parts of the world. A member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Jack served in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart for his service and valor. Throughout his life, Jack was guided by his Catholic faith and his many discussions and friendships with members of the clergy. A member of AA for over 30 years, he found inspiration in his friendships and beliefs and was a friend to all and inspired many. He loved animals and traveled with his beloved springer spaniels Annie, Tobey and Reggie throughout the years and there were many a story of their visits to the firehouse. Jack attended college at Boston State College and Charlottetown University. Visiting hours will be held at the Gormley Funeral Home., 2055 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA 02132 on Sunday, February, 2nd from 2-6PM. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady Of Perpetual Hope, 1545 Tremont St., Boston, MA on Monday, February 3rd at 10:30AM followed by interment at St. Josephs Cemetery in West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to support cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 or to the Animal Rescue League of Boston at 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130.
