HIGGINS Bernardine F. (Whelan) of West Roxbury, Oct. 20, 2013 at home at the age of 84. Beloved wife of 45 years to Bruce W. Higgins Sr. Devoted mother of Heidi (Higgins) Petrilli and her husband Fred of Norton and Bruce W. Higgins Jr. and his wife Lori of West Roxbury. Loving grandmother of Shawn and Jennifer Petrilli and Madelyn and Ryan Higgins. Sister of Claire Johnston of Hingham. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral from the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre St. WEST ROXBURY on Thursday, Oct. 24th at 9am. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Theresa Church at 10 o’clock. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8pm. Relatives and friends invited. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery. Bernardine worked as a registered nurse for 50 years in various segments of the health care industry. She was educated at the Choate School in Brookline, followed by St. Margaret’s School of Nursing. She went on to earn her B.S. and M.S. in Nursing from Boston College where she was President of her class. She worked in occupational and geriatric nursing for most of her career, until her retirement of 16 years from the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged. In her spare time, she worked on many political campaigns alongside her husband. She was also a Eucharistic Minister at St. Theresa’s Parish. More than anything, she enjoyed spending time with her family.
