Obituary

MADDI Rosemarie MD, of Newton, prominent physician, anesthesiologist, and teacher passed away on October 21, 2013 after battling with Alzheimer’s disease for 8 years. Rosemarie was the kind of selfless physician whom people would seek out, and come to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital to be under her care.

Dr. Maddi was Chief of Cardiac Anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a member of its executive committee, a leader of several physicians groups and member of the Harvard Medical School Faculty. She was the primary anesthesiologist for New England’s first heart transplant in February 1984, and the anesthesiologist for the first bypass operation performed in China when a Brigham teaching team operated on several senior officials.

Dr. Maddi taught legions of residents at Brigham and Women’s Hospital many of whom have risen to leadership positions in Boston and throughout the world.

In addition to full time duties at Brigham and Women’s, Dr. Maddi authored or coauthored twenty original research papers on anesthesia in cardiac patients. Her teaching included eight visiting Professorships at major hospitals in Moscow, Beijing, and Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington. She served on panels and committees with scientific, charitable and ethical foci. Dr. Maddi served as Chair, Vice-chair, and President of the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists.

To everyone else, she was “Rosemarie” or “Rosie”.
Born in Binghamton, New York, daughter of Marie and Dr. Ignatius Maddi, a graduate of Mount Holyoke College, where she was honored as a Mary Lyons scholar. She received her medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine in 1975, completed her residency at Tufts, and joined the Brigham in 1980 where she remained throughout her career.

Rosemarie leaves her beloved sister, Marylinda Maddi of Pittsburgh, PA, and her brother Dr. Joseph Maddi of Grand Island, NY, as well as 5 nieces and 2 nephews. The family would like to thank Ann Cloherty and Maureen Tubridy for their loyalty, kindness and caring that made Rosemarie’s life as comfortable as her disease would allow.

The family would like to receive friends and colleagues from 4-8 PM on Friday, October 25th at George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St Wellesley, MA 02482. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 26th at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church 1321 Centre St Newton Center, MA 02459. Interment will immediately follow the funeral liturgy at Newton Cemetery Walnut Street, Newton Center MA.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations to Women Of Means, 148 Linden St., Suite 208 Wellesley MA 02462 or MSPCA-Angell, 350 South Huntington Ave. Boston, MA 02130.
