Obituary

Lynn, Herbert F. Jr. of Wellesley Hills and Chatham passed away on August 5th at the age of 85. Herb was a native of Brookline, Massachusetts, and lived there for more than 50 years before moving to Wellesley in 1984. The son of a career Brookline Police patrolman, he attended the Heath School and graduated from Brookline High School in 1942.
Herb served as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II, distinguishing himself as a B-24 bomber pilot. Upon his return home, he married the late Lois (Donovan) Lynn, also of Brookline. They had three children during their 27 year marriage. Lois predeceased him in 1974.
He met his second wife, Phyllis (Callahan) Lynn, while working at New England Life. After 33 years of marriage, they remained devoted companions until his death.
He received a degree in Business Administration from Northeastern University, and subsequently earned the prestigious Charted Life Underwriter designation. Herb was employed by New England Life in various capacities for more than 30 years. He retired in 1984 as the VP of policyholder services.
Herb enjoyed both golf and tennis, and was a member of Nehoiden Golf Club for many years. He was an accomplished candlepin bowler and a skilled surfcaster. He cherished time spent at his beach house in Chatham and on his annual trips to the Caribbean.
He was a uniquely capable individual that didn’t take himself too seriously. Herb could fell a tree, “sweat” a pipe, and man a barbecue. But he was also willing for others to learn from his mistakes, and he shared those lessons freely and with great humor.
Herb delighted in the academic, athletic and artistic achievements of his children and, more recently, his grandchildren. He was always happy in the midst of a cook-out or holiday gathering with family and friends.
Herb is also survived by his wife and best friend, Phyllis; two daughters, Lois Levine of Hingham and Jane O’Connell and her husband Michael of Chatham; a son, Brian Lynn and his partner Melissa Durgin, of Sandwich; and his grandchildren Katie (O’Connell) Hunter, Andrew O’Connell, Joe and Jamie Levine, and Rachel and Sawyer Lynn.
Funeral service in the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home 477 Washington Street, Wellesley (Rt.16) on Monday at 12 Noon. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours Sunday 4-8. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Herbert’s name to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
