Dave and I were members of the Kennington American Legion Post 34 in Broad Ripple. I first knew him when he was working for IBM in Indpls and he was helping me setup a computer network when I was the Director for Corporate Computer Operations for the Health and Hospital Corp. of Marion County. We met the last time when he was in Indpls. around Christmas of 2006 I believe, when he visiting his children and we had lunch at our Legion Post. I also had a interest in sailing as I had sailed out of Newport RI. Dave the seas are calm from now on!!

Dear Joy, I was deeply saddened by the news of David’s passing. I pray that God, family and friends comfort you through this difficult time. The Helmold legacy is tried and strong. David was a good man of quiet character who always seemed to simply enjoy life. While time and the situations of this world afforded us little time together, he holds a place in our harts that has now been made all the more special. I am sure if asked, David would say that his was a life will lived. I look forward to celebrating David’s life with you on the 10th. God’s Peace.

Dear Joy, My life is certainly better for having known David. Both yours and David's friendship and affection helped me keep my sanity many times. I sincerely hope you will call on my strength when you need some. Joe and I will see you this Saturday, Karen

Dear Joy and family,We just learned about David's passing today. We are so sorry for the emptiness you all must be feeling right now. Strange, but as we celebrated "The Tales of Hoffmann",this weekend, we thought about you and David and wondered how you were. We have such fond and crazy memories of after opera parties at your home. Ah, how we would carry on to the wee small hours. I remember staying so late, David would start making breakfast for us! Please contact us. We have much catching up to do. Wishing you peace at this time.

Joy, I can't believe David's gone and so quickly too. Even though I won't be there for the Memorial Service, know I will be thinking about you and David, and Sarah and Clint. GLP won't be the same without him. Pam is devastated as I'm sure you are.( And he never made fun of me wanting to wear a life jacket while on the boat.) My heart goes out to you at this very difficult time. Love, Marcy

?I got to know Dave after he and I both had retired from IBM which would have been about 1990. Our common interest was the IBM PC and we both were running the famous (??) OS/2 operating system. We did have our occasional challenges with it from time to time but overall we made or allowed it, to function better than the other PC operating systems of the time. He was always fun to be with since he was ever ready to try something new - at least on his PC. Since I also spent my tour in the Navy we enjoyed swapping stories, many which I'm sure we repeated over time. When he and Joy moved to Connecticut, Dave and I continued frequent contact by email and that continued right up to his last few weeks as he was able. I knew that when I saw an email in my in-box from Dave that it was going to be something that was either thought provoking or hilarious. I miss those emails these days but I know that Dave is in a better place without troubles or pain. My sincere condolences and prayers are for Joy and the rest of Dave's family at this difficult time. God's Peace to y'all.

I was shocked to read of David's death. He was a faithful reader of my column and I enjoyed his e-mails. We both had Scotland roots. I taught there, and my sister-in-law, Eva Kimball, was his piano techer. Also, his grandfather gave violin lessons to my late husband Burton, and Burton bought Mr. Helmod's violin. I will certainly miss David and all his wonderful stories. My sympathy to you all. Carol W. Kimball
