Egidio Mello, Jr., 87, the son of the late Eugenia Gonsalves and Egidio Mello, Sr. passed away on January 24, 2011 peacefully after a long illness at Sacred Heart Home surrounded by his family and the staff who took excellent care of him.
Egidio served as a Lieutenant on the New Bedford Police Department until his retirement in 1986 after 31 years of service. He was also a well-known musician in this area.
He is survived by his wife Aleta; his children, Vencelo, Egidio, Christopher, Warren, Patti Mae, and Debra Mello, and Boneta Garrison; and his brother Henry Ponte. He also had four stepchildren with whom he had a very close relationship, Corinna Stancil, Lavell Livramento, Judith Watkins, and Kevin Livramento, who took care of him for a long time. He also leaves many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Stephen Mello, and brother of the late Joseph Burgo, Carl Mello, and Catherine Seguin.
His Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, with viewing at 10 AM. Burial will follow in the Mass.
